Car maker Ford UK is teaming up with insurer By Miles to strengthen its usage-based car insurance offer.
By Miles will launch its new pay-per-view auto insurance later this year for Ford customers. It does not require any additional hardware, using the connected vehicle on-board systems that Ford has integrated into its vehicles. This new partnership makes By Miles the first insurer in the UK to use Ford’s connected vehicle data for a usage-based insurance offering.
Ford explained that it is making data from its connected vehicles available to insurers to help its customers benefit from a usage-based approach to insurance because people travel less to work.
âThe way we travel has undergone a huge change that may well have a lasting impact. We want to advocate for the changing needs of drivers who continue to work from home, âsaid Mark Harvey, director of corporate connectivity for Ford of Europe. âBy working with By Miles, we aim to use data from connected vehicles to help deliver a full range of new, innovative products and services to our customers. “
âThe way insurance used to work may not work for everyone. Whatever the new normal, it’s clear that the needs of drivers are changing rapidly – and people want fairer, more flexible coverage that reflects that, âadded By Miles Founder and CEO James Blackham.
The insurance program will be available to Ford customers who own newer vehicle models with the FordPass Connect modem. Customers simply buy a By Miles policy, then authorize their car to measure the kilometers traveled and share them with the insurer, allowing them to pay for their insurance per kilometer.
No additional devices need to be plugged into a driver’s car to participate in the Pay Per Mile Auto Insurance Program.
