New updates are added at the bottom of this story …….
The original story (published September 07, 2021) follows:
Gone are the days when Microsoft Office was essential software for every computer. Now you just need to access the internet to use Google Docs. It’s an online word processor and the best part? It’s free.
Google Docs includes different types of documents, different templates, and lots of other features like track changes, auto-save, and work from anywhere.
One of the coolest features of Google Docs is the availability on different platforms. It is available on Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, and Chrome OS.
That being said, there is an issue with Google Docs where users say the default templates have mysteriously disappeared for them. If you are familiar with Google Docs, you should know that templates are an essential part of the app.
You can easily create complex documents like CVs, brochures or newsletters with these templates. However, the new issue made it impossible to use default templates for some Docs users.
The issue was first reported late last month. And to this day, more and more people are complaining about it. It should be noted that the problem exists on several platforms.
Below are some of the complaints from affected users, whether they are Workspace or Personal account types, posted on Google Support.
I have had almost the same problem for 4-5 days. I have tried multiple personal accounts in multiple browsers / devices. I can only see one template in the “Education” category called “Report”. Even a previously used “Project Proposal” template can no longer be seen.
We have this problem with our education account. Google sheets, forms, quiz templates are all there. It’s just the docs that are missing. My personal Google account has them there. We reported it to Google through our admin console and the guy was able to look at our screen and we made some tweaks. He said he could see the problem was not on our side. he has yet to respond with a solution.
As of this writing, the issue of Google Docs default templates missing for some users has yet to be resolved and there is no workaround.
On the bright side, a product expert reported the matter to Google for further investigation.
Hope more users report this issue in this thread so that we can get an idea of the extent of this issue. In the meantime, I will report it to the team for investigation. I will return as soon as I receive any updates.
Those affected can at least post a comment on the active thread in question to speed up the bug fixing process. For now, we can only wait and hope that this problem will be resolved quickly.
We will keep you posted as we meet other related developments.
Update 1 (September 11)
2:40 p.m. (IST): A Diamond product expert on the community forums has some unfortunate news for those facing this issue as they have claimed the following:
I do not have any details on the progress of resolving this issue. I am not a Google employee, so the information I receive is limited. Engineers cannot provide an estimated date for a fix because there are several complications that can cause this issue and a fix may take a long time. As I noted above, I’m staying on top of this and won’t let it slip through the cracks. As soon as I hear something, I’ll let you know. (Source)
So it looks like users may have to wait a bit longer to get a resolution from Google.
Update 2 (September 16)
6:17 p.m. (IST): Several users have confirmed that the issue is now fixed, as they claim that the models are now back and working.
Problem solved for me, all default models are back. (Source)
Yes. All models are back for me too. Good work. (Source)
I just checked and mine are back – thanks for sorting out Jo S! (Source)
