How to upgrade your in-car charging experience for iPhone

The other day I showed how the first thing I do when I get a new iPhone with daily driver is stick a screen protector on it and put it in a case. It’s a great way to keep a new iPhone looking like new.

But the case I chose to use – the Quad Lock MAG Case — generated a few comments and messages asking me if it’s good for car use.

It seems like a lot of you want to keep your iPhone in a holder while you’re in your car and looking for a decent mounting system.

Quad Lock offers just that.

I’ve been using a Quad Lock case, suction cup mount, and wireless charger for over a year, and I’m very happy with them. I was initially skeptical because systems that rely on lots of props are often unreliable. Usually there are one or two decent accessories, and the rest sucks.

I was also concerned that even if the case was good, the car mounting system would be horrible (because I hate to tell you, so many in-car mounting systems are horrible).

But I liked the Quad Lock system.

There were definitely some downsides, in particular that getting the phone into the mount could be a bit of a hassle, and you had to leave plenty of space around the mount for the phone as it had to go in at an angle and then twist to click into place.

The new Quad Lock MAG system solves this problem.

The phone simply snaps into place with the power of the magnets.

It’s really easy.

So easy you can almost throw the phone in the holder.

And don’t worry, the magnets won’t be strong enough to hold your phone in place. I’ve used it in trucks on rough roads with no issues.

It’s a good system.

In order to make the system work, I had to upgrade the wireless charger. No big deal, the old one didn’t support faster charging protocols and it had a rather annoying LED built in.

The new wireless charging head solves these problems.

Since the old mounts are not compatible with the new heads, Quad Lock provides a new gimbal head with the wireless charging head.

It’s a nice touch. Quad Lock deserves kudos for supporting older hardware and not just telling users to buy more accessories.

Good job, Quad Lock.

Everything in the system exudes quality. Little touches like threaded inserts (rather than putting threads in plastic, which is much weaker), and the inclusion of blue threadlocker on the screws to keep them from coming apart from vibration are de nice touches.

The new MAG cases also seem less prone to overheating phones as they are thinner to allow for more efficient charging.

As for the suction cup, it’s one of the best I’ve ever used. Other than once I stuck it to a window that had way too much condensation on it, it has never let me down. And this mount is often moved from vehicle to vehicle, which wears out most suction cup mounts very quickly.

This is yet another part of the Quad Lock system that comes highly recommended.

My favorite charger is still the LinkOn 130W USB-C to USB-C Charger. Not only is it powerful enough to charge phones and tablets, it’s also perfect for drones and even laptops.
