During E3 2021 Nintendo Direct, we received a bunch of announcements for new Nintendo Switch games. Among them was Mario Party Superstars, which is already available for pre-order. This isn’t a brand new Mario Party – it’s kind of like a combination of a collection and a remake as it features platters and minigames from previous Mario Party entries. Still confused? Let’s dive into it.
What is Mario Party Superstars?
This is the last Mario Party game in the franchise. Instead of being a brand new entry, it’s actually a collection of popular boards and mini-games remade from the series. For example, there are five game boards from the N64 era as well as 100 mini-games from the entire series. The game saves after each round, so you can pick up where you left off.
What do Mario Party games look like?
The way these games work, up to four players roll the dice and travel around a virtual board game. If you don’t have enough players, some characters will be controlled by the computer. At the end of each round, players are separated into teams or must face off against everyone in silly mini-games. Things tend to get pretty crazy when playing with friends.
The winner (s) of each mini-game receive coins, which can be used to purchase stars or other gifts on the game board. The player with the most stars at the end of a game predetermined number of turns wins.
Players can also get special items on the board or steal stars from others. The boards you play on offer different challenges and benefits, so you’ll need to strategize different depending on which one you choose.
What’s new in Mario Party Superstars?
Although this is a collection of boards and previous mini-games, there are a lot of new elements that help to make the game fun.
- Online game : In addition to the local game, you can play online against others.
- Stamps: Each character has a set of stamps that represent different emotions. Place them during someone else’s turn (whether locally or online) to show all other players how you are feeling at any given time.
- Automatic recording: The game saves at the end of each round, so you can stop playing when you need to and come back later.
- Updated graphics: Peach’s birthday cake desserts look so decadent, and the characters all have a lot more texture and detail than in the original games.
- Countdown of the path: In addition to knowing how many moves you have left after your dice roll, the game tells you how far away from the star you will be based on the paths you take (as shown in the image above).
- New characters: When the original Mario Party games on N64 came out, some characters weren’t playable or in Rosalina’s case, they hadn’t even been created yet.

Mario Party Superstars Boards
We know that there will be five classic boards from the N64 era. The ones we know so far are Space Land and Peach’s Birthday Cake.
Each board offers different advantages and challenges. For example, the Space Land board has a countdown timer in the center, and whenever it hits zero, the Bowser Coin Beam will trigger and remove any player’s coins it touches.

We know there will be at least 100 mini-games in Mario Party Superstars. I’ve put together the following list by going through the videos Nintendo has posted so far. In addition to local couch co-op, this latest game also supports online play. This way you can always find someone to compete with. As always, you will need a Nintendo Switch Online membership to participate in online activities.

Yes, unlike Super Mario Party when it was released, Super Mario Superstars does support the Pro Controller. Enjoy the game the way you want, whether in portable mode, with Joy-Cons or with the more traditional controller.
