The special 2023 Mercedes-Maybach S680 pays tribute to designer Virgil Abloh

  • Mercedes has unveiled Virgil Abloh’s 2023 Mercedes-Maybach S680, the “final chapter” in a collaboration with the late fashion designer.
  • The limited-edition model features the same two-tone black and beige look as the Project Maybach concept car that Abloh helped design, revealed by Mercedes last fall.
  • Mercedes will only build 150 units of the model worldwide when it arrives later this year.

When iconic fashion designer Virgil Abloh passed away last November, Mercedes-Benz paid tribute to him by unveiling the Maybach project. The beautiful off-road luxury coupe concept was a collaboration between Abloh and Mercedes design director Gorden Wagener. Now, Mercedes has revealed what it calls the “final chapter” of the Abloh-Wagener partnership, Virgil Abloh’s 2023 Mercedes-Maybach S680, the design of which was finalized before Abloh passed away.

Essentially a highly customized Mercedes-Maybach S680, Abloh and Wagener’s creation is finished with two-tone paintwork similar to that found on the Project Maybach concept car. The upper part is painted in obsidian black while the lower part of the car, including the one-piece wheels, is covered in a beige hue.

The same two-tone scheme appears inside, with sand-colored Nappa leather accented by black trim on the doors, center console and steering wheel. Mercedes-Maybach and Virgil Abloh logos adorn the center console, rear cushions, headrests and door sills. Mercedes even says the infotainment system has been customised: the home button has a matching beige color and a logo marking the limited edition. There are also profile pictures available for the screen with fashion accessories.

Virgil Abloh’s 2023 Mercedes-Maybach S680 will be available in the United States later this year, with just 150 units produced worldwide. Customers will also receive a 1/18 scale replica of the car in a bespoke wooden box wrapped in tan Nappa leather, along with a special car cover featuring the Maybach and Abloh logo. There’s no word yet on pricing for either this special edition or the standard V-12-powered Maybach S680, but both are likely to command well over $200,000.
