The Indian automobile market witnessed an upsurge in demand on August 22. With the festive season approaching and increased demand, Indian automakers including Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai as well as Tata Motors are recording sales record sales. Here is a quick roundup of the top 1o automakers in India last month who collectively shipped over 317,000 units last month, recording a 29% improvement in sales year-on-year. The launches of new SUV models, improved chip supply as well as various holiday offers and discounts are credited to the collective positive emotion around the Indian auto market in August.


India’s top passenger vehicle maker managed to ship 134,166 units last month, up 30% from 103,187 units sold in the corresponding period a year ago. Additionally, the introduction of newer models over the past few months has also helped the company record a 22% year-to-date performance improvement (April-August 2022) to 646,170 units sold this year against 529,981 units sold in the corresponding period a year ago.

Hyundai Motor India:

Second on the list is Cretan automaker, Hyundai Motor India, which announced shipments of 49,510 units last month, registering a 6% growth from 46,866 units sold in August 21. The company announced that its SUV Creta continues to be instrumental in the overall performance of the brand in India. In addition, he announced that the sales momentum has increased thanks to the improving chip situation globally. Tarun Garg, Director (Sales, Marketing and Service) of Hyundai Motor India, said, “As the semiconductor situation continues to improve, supplies continue to increase.

Tata engines:

Tata Motors managed to register an exceptional growth of 68% year-on-year by selling 47,166 PV against 28,018 units during the corresponding period in 2021. Moreover, it is interesting to note that the overall sales of the company are just 339 units shy of its best monthly sales of 47,505 units earlier this year in July. The Safari maker saw 60% growth in PV ICE sales, while 276% growth in electric vehicles.

Mahindra & Mahindra:Mahindra took the fourth position in the list and like Tata Motors, it also saw strong ToT growth in August. The company sold 29,852 units last month, an 87% increase from the 15,973 units sold in the corresponding period a year ago. According to India’s top UV maker, 98% of its sales (29,516 units) were made up of SUVs.

Kia India:

Kia India managed to record a 33.27% annual growth to 22,322 wholesale units in August 2022. The Seltos remains the brand’s best seller and accounted for 39% of overall sales last month, according to the giant South Korean car. “We are seeing upward momentum in sales since the beginning of this year, and this is a good sign for the Indian automotive market. Comparing quarters, our monthly average so far for the third quarter of 2022 is rose to 7.8% from the second quarter and 10.9% from the first quarter of this year, indicating a gradual improvement in supply chain constraints and healthy consumer sentiment,” said said Hardeep Singh Brar, Vice President and Head of Sales and Marketing, Kia India.

That said, the next positions were taken by Toyota Kirloskar Motor at 14,959 units, Honda Cars India at 7,769 units, Skoda Auto India at 4,222 units, MG Motor India at 3,823 units and Nissan Motor India at 3,283 units.
