Vinton buys high-tech police cameras and upgraded car cameras

VINTON, Va. (WDBJ) – For the first time, Vinton officers will wear body cameras on patrol, with several high-tech wide lenses to capture an emergency encounter from all angles.

“It’s a great opportunity. It’s a technology that exists and a technology that communicates, ”said Chief Fabricio Drumond of the upgrade which he says has been underway for months.

“When an officer, if he activates his emergency equipment on his portable radio, it will automatically trigger the cameras to start recording both the car cameras, the radios and the body worn cameras,” explains Chief Drumond. “We already have Motorola radios that we use to communicate, so the three devices will synchronize with each other and essentially be a single ecosystem that creates multiple viewpoints. “

Vinton City Council members unanimously approved the resolution to purchase 16 of the body and action cameras, including installation and accessories.

The cost is $ 74,159, which will come from criminal justice grants, the city’s capital improvement projects fund, and asset forfeiture money collected by the police department.

Chief Drumond said the cameras would improve transparency and security for the citizens of Vinton and the officers who wear them.

“It’s just another pair of eyes, as are the members of our community. It’s another camera that’s ready to capture things that we can data collect or that we can watch and review later or share with the audience as needed.

Chief Drumond says he plans to give a formal demonstration of how the equipment works to City Council and WDBJ7 once the cameras are in the hands of the police department in the coming weeks.
